Comprehensive Geography of Iran is published by the CGIE press under the supervision of Kazem Mousavi Bojnourdi, the head of the Centre for the Great Islamic Encyclopaedia. Dr. Abbas Saeedi is the editor-in-chief of this series.

CGIE has been focusing for more than thirty years on the promotion of the culture and science in Iran. In addition to several volumes of the Great Islamic Encyclopaedia in Persian, Arabic, and English, other comprehensive encyclopaedias has been published by CGIE. Moreover, in the last decade, the centre has published reference books and series on various fields of Iranian studies. Comprehensive Geography of Iran is one of these works, the first edition of which is available now.

Identifying the geographical features of the country constitutes the basis for public awareness of the environment. Furthermore, it provides the essential scientific foundation for young people and the decision-making officials with cultural, social, economic, and political knowledge. Comprehensive Geography of Iran can be considered as the first effort for collective scientific work in Iran in the field of geography.

The preparation for compiling the Comprehensive Geography of Iran was chiefly based on the following objectives:

1. To provide Comprehensive knowledge of the country, including environmental, ecological, socio-economic and political characteristics of Iran;
2. To compile a scientific reference for the audience, particularly the elites, experts, managers and decision-makers of the country to achieve a proper understanding of the characteristics of Iran.

In this series, various topics are organized in a continuous and interrelated manner, while maintaining thematic independence. The titles are as follows:

Volume One: Characteristics of the Natural Environment of Iran

Volume Two: Historical Political Characteristics and Population

Volume Three: Administrative Division: Provinces

Volume Four: Lifestyles and Human Settlements

Volume Five: Urbanization and Economics

It is clear that a proper compilation of comprehensive geography of Iran required collective work of experts in several fields related to the geography of Iran, including geology, climate, natural resources, demography, various ways of social life, and economic and political activities.
