The Encyclopaedia of Law

The Encyclopaedia of Law

The Encyclopaedia of Law is another cultural product of the Centre for the Great Islamic Encyclopaedia, focusing on Iran’s laws. Preparations for its compilation have been started since about two years ago. This encyclopaedia aims to compile articles about Iranian law based on the historical background of the topics and their evolution. In addition to all branches of law, this encyclopaedia also deals with legal philosophy and jurisprudential issues related to Iranian law. The main part of selecting the titles of entries has been completed. The Centre commenced the project by forming a scientific board consisting of prominent law professors, headed by Ayatollah Dr Mostafa Mohaghegh Damad, a renowned law professor and a member of the Scientific High Council of the Centre for the Great Islamic Encyclopaedia (CGIE). So far, more than five hundred pages of articles from prominent authors, such as the late Professors Nasser Katouzian and Dr Akhundi, have been collected and are being edited and prepared for publication. The first volume will be published as soon as the financial conditions improve.

Another feature of this encyclopaedia is that all articles are authored and not translated or adapted from other encyclopaedias. However, the legal entries of other products of the Centre have been used extensively. Also, in the structure of the articles, historical contexts and legal information about ancient Iran, which is usually ignored in such articles, will be examined. The articles are compiled by experts in various legal fields and reflect the latest domestic and foreign issues. It is planned to present the first edition of this encyclopaedia in five volumes.
