This Department has a complex field of study and works in two subdivisions: Islamic law from one side and Qur'an and Hadith studies from other side.
In the first subdivision, the Department deals with subjects related to Traditional Islamic Law (Fiqh) with a historical approach; the subjects such as technical terms as well as personalities and schools.
Concerning the Qur'an and Hadith studies, the Department had a wide range of studies, some of which covers the culture of Qur'an and Hadith and some covers the traditional fields of exegesis (tafsir), Qur'an sciences and Hadith sciences.
The main responsibility of the Department is management of research supporting the articles of Encyclopedia, as well as scientific editing of written articles. In addition, the Department is responsible for selecting and editing of related entries.
