The Great Encyclopedia of Iran

Concerning the value and importance of general encyclopedias in disseminating of the human knowledge, making a close cultural relation with other nations, and introducing cultural achievements and civilization of different countries to Iranian people, The Center for the Great Islamic Encyclopedia (CGIE) decided to compile and publish a general encyclopedia, "The Great Encyclopedia of Iran", containing scientific and documentary articles for doing research. This Encyclopedia covers all aspects of history, culture and civilization of the world with special concern about Iranian culture, literature, language and history and Persian language. It is anticipated that The Great Encyclopedia of Iran be published in 30 volumes. More than one volume of this encyclopedia is ready to publish. The articles of The Great Encyclopedia of Iran cover the following fields:

  • Iran in pre-Islamic times
    The articles related to this section is mostly written and compiled by Iranian researchers involved in iranology in Iran and other countries.

  • History of the Islamic world
    The written articles in The Great Islamic Encyclopedia are summarized or completed and used for covering this section.

  • History, culture and civilization of the world
    The articles related to this section is mainly extracted and translated from creditable and reliable general and international encyclopedias such as Britannica, Americana, Larousse and etc. so, many proficient translators have close cooperation with CGIE for doing this job.


The same process for identifying, selecting and approving entries as well as writing and editing articles in different scientific sections of The Great Islamic Encyclopedia is followed in The Great Persian Encyclopedia.
